Four simple tips for the job search
by Shawn Stevenson
The job marketplace is vast but also highly competitive — yet there are some very simple things you can do to help distinguish yourself from the job-seeking competition.
Here are four tips to consider as you prepare to search for a job in your chosen profession:
• Learn as much as possible while in school and take advantage of any learning opportunities that surround you. You never know how an experience or skill you gain might end up paying off during your job search.
• Look for opportunities to network. While I still have some level of dislike towards the word "networking", I've come to realize it doesn't mean schmoozing and shaking hands with everyone you meet only for the sake of personal gain. Realize that every person you come in contact with becomes part of your personal network — and within that group there is tremendous potential for help and encouragement during your job search. Keep your eyes open to ways you could utilize your network.
• Consider the "start-low, aim-high strategy." Don't be too proud to accept a lower level position with a company if you feel there are opportunities for advancement. Many companies promote from within — so just getting your foot in the door of a company through a low-level job gives you the opportunity to demonstrate your value to that company as you position yourself for promotion.
• Prepare and be confident. During the job interview, your goal is to convince those who are hiring that you're the best candidate for the job position. Yet you can undermine your own efforts by displaying doubt in your abilities or in the belief that you are the best applicant – which might occur when you haven't adequately prepared for the interview. Gather knowledge about the job position in advance of the interview, so that you'll be able to confidently relate how your qualifications are a match for the company's needs.
